Seven Strings by Candlelight

The New Zealand String Quartet’s annual “candlelight” concert at St Mary of the Angels Church has been popular with Wellington concertgoers for many years. In 2011, New Zealand’s favorite chamber ensemble was joined by musical friends from the NZSO for a rich and varied programme.

For Strauss’s thrilling septet Metamorphosen, three NZSO musicians joined the Quartet – outstanding double bass player Hiroshi Ikematsu, Principal bass with the NZSO, alongside Andrew Joyce, Principal cello and Julia Joyce, viola.

Hiroshi also joined the Quartet for the Dvorak Bass Quintet and the programme was completed by John Psathas’s Greek-inspired string quartet, Kartsigar.
